Abstract:

The paper summarises data about the fauna of robber flies (Asilidae, Diptera) of Portugal based on the material collected by the authors in 2006 and 2007. Descriptions of 5 new species are given: Habropogon grimmi sp. n., Holopogon carrapateirae sp. n., Leptogaster algarvensis sp. n., Machimus albifacies sp. n. and Scylaticus sequeirae sp. n. Moreover, 11 species were for the first time recorded from Portugal: Dasypogon melanopterus Loew, 1869, Dioctria baumhaueri Meigen, 1820, Dioctria navasi Seguy, 1929, Dioctria pollinosa Loew, 1870, Dioctria wiedemanni Meigen, 1820, Dysmachus hiulcus Pandellé, 1905, Holopogon claripennis Loew, 1856, Holopogon siculus Macquart, 1834, Leptogaster subtilis Loew, 1849, Machimus concinnus Loew, 1870 and Machimus subdolus Loew, 1871. A new checklist of 47 species of Portugese robber flies is presented. Antiphrisson thalhalmmeri Lichtwardt, 1903, formerly regarded a synonym of Antiphrisson trifarius (Loew, 1849), is considered a valid species on the basis of examination of available Hungarian material. Holopogon claripennis avor Lehr, 1972, which had been described from the Middle Asia, is elevated to species rank following study of the Russian and Portuguese specimens deposited in the collection of M. Hradský and treated as Holopogon avor Lehr, 1972 stat. n.
